What is English for Action?

English for Action provides practical community-based English classes to students of all levels, ages and nationalities in London. The courses are entirely flexible and cater for the specific needs of each group. The classes cover more than English language; they offer training and advice relating to everyday difficulties faced by members of London's non-English speaking communities. Interview practice, letter writing, how to fill in application forms, story telling and employment rights are examples of ideas that have proven to be popular.

English for Action delivers courses to groups at a time and venue convenient to the group. The group will generally come from a single institution such as school, church or workers association and the institution must provide the classroom. This may be at a local community centre, church hall, or perhaps school.

We believe that better language skills will enable many migrants to put more into, and get more out of, life in London. The emphasis is voluntary, rather than compulsory, integration.Participants will be better equipped to affect positive changes in their homes, communities and workplaces.

The teaching methodology is inspired by the ideas of radical educator, Paulo Freire. Learners are encouraged to share their experiences with the teacher and other learners. Critical thinking and dialogue are valued above rote learning and repetition. The syllabus is negotiated by the members of the group and is not imposed by the teacher.

History

English for Action was launched in 2006. The first lesson took place at the London School of Economics on September 28th to students from the London Citizens Workers Association. The project was inspired by a similar scheme piloted by Camille Makunganya and London CITIZENS in 2005, in Deptford with members of Our Lady's Church. The project was set up with funds from UnLtd. In June 2009 we secured a major grant from the Ullens Foundation which enabled us to expand.

In three years, we have taught over 200 people, worked with over 20 institutions including the TUC, the Natural History Museum, Working Well Trust and several churches and primary schools. We are currently active across four boroughs.

In May 2009 we incorporated (company number 6909738) and in December of the same year we received notification of our charitable status (charity number 1133268). We are registered at 46 Sistova Rd, London SW12 9QS.
